Innovative Approaches to Disaster Risk Reduction for Small Island Nations - A Roundtable Discussion

The Maldives Space Research Organisation (MSRO), in coordination with the Pacific Disaster Center (PDC), will host a closed, invitation-only roundtable discussion under Chatham House rules designed to foster the exchange of views on the areas of technical and strategic opportunity and challenge facing disaster risk across small island nations. Bringing together national representatives from national disaster management authorities, space agencies, and private sector capabilities, the session will serve as a focal point for relevant parties from across the Caribbean and Indo-Pacific regions, and provide a forum for developing and coordinating new common understandings, efficient approaches, and innovative practises amidst heightening climatic and anthropogenic risks.

Space Security and Sustainability Workshop

During the Space for Island Nations Conference (SINC) 2024, in coordination with the Maldives Space Research Organisation (MSRO), the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) and the Secure World Foundation (SWF) will sponsor a closed, invitation-only workshop for government and other relevant stakeholders to encourage the sharing of views on this topic, providing a forum for informal discussion around current challenges to space security, sustainability, and stability, and the role that Small Island Nations can play in fostering common understanding.

UNIDIR and SWF will also hold a panel session where space security experts and other interested stakeholders will explore the importance of space security and sustainability for Small Island Nations, discuss the current state of multilateral discussions on this topic, and strive to identify what concerns specific to Small Island Nations exist about their continued access to and use of space.
